Ellen DeGeneres praises Dutee Chand, India's first openly gay athlete
American television host Ellen DeGeneres praised Indian athlete Dutee Chand for becoming the first sportsperson in India to openly come out as gay. Dutee Chand recently revealed that she is in a same-sex relationship with a distant relative of her from Odisha.
Ellen took to her official Twitter account to praise Dutee, she wrote, “She’s the 100m record holder and the first openly gay sportsperson in India. I guess she knows a thing or two about being first. I’m so proud of her.”
However, it is not as great as it sounds, Dutee has accused her elder sister of blackmailing and said that she was forced to come out about her same-sex relationship because of her. Dutee further revealed that her sister had once beaten her after which she reported the matter to the police.
Earlier, Dutee also revealed that her sister threw out her brother from home because she does not like his wife. Dutee said that her sister wields all the power and authority at home and is not allowing her to marry her soulmate.
The 100m national record holder (11.24 seconds) has won two silver medals at 2018 Asian Games. Dutee was banned for one year by international athletics federation in 2014 for having higher testosterone (male sex hormones) level than permissible. Dutee fought and won the case against IAAF, the court of arbitration in 2015 allowed her to compete in 100 and 200m again.
