Seoul: South Korean investigators arrested President Yoon Suk-yeol on Wednesday over accusations of inciting an uprising against the government. Authorities executed the arrest warrant at 10:33 am local time (01:30 GMT), according to a statement from the Joint Investigation Headquarters.

Death penalty or life imprisonment possible

If proven, the accusations could lead to serious consequences for Yoon, with the potential for the death penalty or life imprisonment under the South Korean constitution.

Evading arrest for weeks

Yoon had been evading arrest for weeks, with a team from the Presidential Security Service guarding his residence. Supporters had also gathered outside, showing strong backing for the president amid growing tensions.

Attempted arrest foiled earlier

The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO), which is working alongside the police and the defence ministry, first attempted to arrest Yoon earlier this month. However, the attempt was thwarted when soldiers and members of the presidential security detail blocked investigators from approaching the compound.

Message before arrest

In a recorded video message before his arrest, Yoon stated that he would comply with the Corruption Investigation Office's questioning. However, he expressed his disagreement with the legality of the investigation, stating that his decision was made to prevent any bloodshed.

Impeachment and suspension

Yoon's troubles began in December 2024 when he was impeached by South Korea's National Assembly for his attempt to impose martial law. The assembly voted 204 to 85 in favour of his impeachment, resulting in his suspension from office.
