SHOCKING: 5.77 Lakh Students Pass, but Only 42,000 Register for Diploma Engineering

Surat: Despite a high pass percentage in the 10th board exams, diploma engineering colleges in the state are staring at a severe shortage of students.

Out of the 5.77 lakh students who cleared the 10th board exams, only 42,000 have registered for diploma engineering courses, leaving over 22,000 seats vacant.

The Gujarat Board and CBSE Board had declared the 10th board exam results, with a high pass percentage. However, the number of students registering for diploma engineering courses has been disappointing.

The Admission Committee for Professional Diploma Courses (ACPD) had started the registration process for diploma engineering courses before the board exam results were declared.

According to the data, there are 63,058 seats available in 151 diploma engineering colleges in the state.

However, only 42,655 students have registered for the courses, and 41,614 students have been included in the merit list. This indicates that over 22,000 seats will remain vacant this year.

Experts say that the vacant seats will increase further as many students who have been included in the merit list may not get their preferred branch or college. These students may opt out of the admission process, leading to more vacant seats.

The ACPD has instructed students who have been included in the merit list to choose their colleges by July 8. After that, the mock round and admission allotment process will begin. However, not all students need to confirm their admissions, leading to more vacant seats.

The state has 31 government diploma engineering colleges with 20,698 seats, five aided colleges with 1,515 seats, and 115 self-financed colleges with 40,845 seats. Despite a high pass percentage in the 10th board exams, the diploma engineering colleges are struggling to attract students.
