Watch: BMC bulldozers demolish film studios in Mumbai after NGT order
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on April 7 began demolishing film studios in Mumbai after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) declared them ‘illegally built’. The studios are located in Madh-Marve area of the maximum city.
The studios owners misused the permission granted by the authorities and built permanent structures instead of temporary ones.
Acting on the orders, the BMC officials along with bulldozers reached the Madh-Marve area and started the demolishing the structures.
Watch here.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya claimed that the BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal knew about the illegally built structures but didn’t take any action. According to Somaiya, the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray had given the ‘illegal’ permission in the name of temporary structures. The BJP leader is also a whistle blower in the case.
The NGT stated that they found the permission was given only for setting up temporary structures but huge studious were built using steel and concrete materials.
“In our assessment, such structures cannot be held to be of temporary nature by their size and the material used but the studios claimed that these structures were prepared using eco-friendly material, therefore, and they should be treated to be of temporary nature. We are not in agreement with this argument and find that these kinds of structures show violation of the grant of temporary permission,” read NGT order.
“In this case, there is blatant violation because they did not remove the structures in question before moving further application for granting temporary permission for raising construction,” the order further read.
