US-based Indian techie gets jailed for 9 years after sexually assaulting sleeping passenger on plane
A man from Tamil Nadu, who is stationed in US, has been sentenced to jail for sexually assaulting female passenger on plane.
Prabhu Ramamoorthy, 35, has been alleged with a “brazen sexual assault” against a female passenger who was sleeping in the commercial airplane earlier this year.
Prabhu came to US in 2015 with the H1-B visa, and he will be deported to India as soon as he completes his jail term, the order by a federal court read in Detroit as it sentenced the techie for 9 years in jail.
US Attorney Matthew Schneider has said “Everyone has the right to be secure and safe when they travel on airplanes. We will not tolerate the behaviour of anyone, who takes advantage of victims who are in a vulnerable position. We appreciate the victim in this case for her courage to speak out.”
The case dates back to August 2018, when a five-day trial happened in the court of US district judge Terrence Berg. The judge had listened to the proceedings and then gave the judgement after more than three and a half hours.
In the recently released report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the part was increasingly “cramped, confined spaces; alcohol and drugs; fewer flight attendants; and dark cabins on night flights factors that likely embolden offenders,” as reported by PTI.
The prosecution lawyer argued that “His lack of empathy and remorse should not go unnoticed by this court.”
