Tied, Thrashed and Burnt: Doctor couple arrested for torturing adopted 4-year-old girl
A couple, both doctors by profession, has been arrested in connection with the torture of a four-year-old girl at their house in the Paltan Bazaar locality, police said on May 7. The minor girl is an adoptive child of the couple.
Psychiatrist Sangeeta Datta from Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district was arrested yesterday, a day after her husband, Dr Walliul Islam, a gastrointestinal and advanced general surgeon, was apprehended from his residence in Guwahati.
According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nandini Kakati, the police received information that the minor child was tied up on a pole on the terrace and being thrashed with a hot rod.
"Police received information that, a four-year-old is tied up on a pole on the terrace of a house and she was being beaten with a hot rod. Police immediately rushed to the spot and rescued the minor girl."
Initially, the couple tried to mislead the police by claiming that the minor girl was their biological child. However, during the investigation, it was discovered that the child was adopted by them.
"At first, they (doctor couple) said that the girl is their own child, but during the investigation, we found that she was not their child and they adopted her,” Kakati added.
Upon rescuing the minor girl, several injuries and burn marks were found on her body. The girl also revealed that she was tortured by the couple.
The police official said that they have arrested the accused couple and a police investigation is underway.
In February this year, Police rescued a 15-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted, starved and tortured by her employers. The couple who engaged the teenager as their domestic help was arrested from their employers' house in New Colony area of Gurugram.
