Sonia Gandhi issues directives for MP leaders amid infighting within Madhya Pradesh Congress

Sonia Gandhi, who was recently inducted as the Congress’ interim president, urged all the conflicting factions of the Madhya Pradesh unit of the party to resolve their disputes and to stop issuing any statement against one another.

The instruction from the interim president came amid the conflict within the Madhya Pradesh Congress with state lawmaker Umang Singhar accusing senior leader Digvijaya Singh of running a proxy government in the state.

Following the instruction from the party high command, some hoardings, calling for Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia as the next Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee president, were pulled down in Bhopal on Thursday.

In the meantime, Chief Minister Kamal Nath convened a meeting of the cabinet sub-committee of political affairs on Thursday in which Umang Shingar was also present.

Following the meet, The Madhya Pradesh ministers declined to make any utterance on the ongoing infighting within the state unit, giving a sence that the instruction had come from the top.

On Thusrday, Umang Singhar came under attack from a party leader who called him a BJP agent. Digvijay Singh’s supporters also burnt a dummy of Umang Singhar to condemn his statement against the former chief minister.

"Umang Singhar is a parasite and a BJP agent. He never fought against the BJP. Instead, his acts and conspiracies always benefited the BJP. He never spoke against the BJP in the state assembly," Manak Agarwal, a senior party leader, alleged.

The troubles for the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh are far from being solved, after the Independent MLAs, who had conferred support to the government, are now manifesting dismay over the way senior leader and lawmakers have started speaking about one another in public.

Independent MLA Surendra Singh Shera, who recently voiced his concern stated, "The way this government is functioning, it appears there is some kind of an earthquake. Seven MLAs have extended support to the government and the situation should be clarified to them as their future depends on this government."

Earlier, Former Chief Minister Digvijay Singh had written to Umang Shingar, asking time from him to which the lawmaker had reponded saying that the former chief minister was welcomed on 4th September. Digvijay Singh, in his response stated that he would be back in Bhopal only on 6th September. The meeting is highly unlikely to happen now.
