Ram Navmi Violence: Amid communal clashes West Bengal Police set to handle Hanuman Jayanti celebrations

After witnessing communal violence and clashes in the different parts of West Bengal on the occasion of Ram Navi, West Bengal police is set to handle the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. The police have deployed security and put in place elaborate arrangements in order to deal with the situation.

The police have provided extra security to all temples, mosques and religious institutions for the coming two days and banned armed allies and processions.

"We have brought in additional forces from Kolkata and other parts of the state to ensure that peace prevails. Only processions without arms would be allowed,” Commissioner of Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate LN Meena was quoted by India Today as saying.

"More than 60 persons have been arrested and we are conducting raids wherever required," he added

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had a meeting with the state director general of police, ADG (law and order), home secretary and chief secretary on Thursday and directed the police to beef up security to prevent any possible incident.

Meanwhile, the BJP and the VHP said that they will not take out any big rally in West Bengal on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti after the incidents of violence happened over Ram Navami celebrations in the stat.

State BJP general secretary Sayantan Basu said that his party would not hold any rally on the occasion. State VHP president Sachindranath Singha said that taking out rallies on Hanuman Jayanti will send a wrong message.

However, Sourish Mukherjee, media-in-charge of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), said, “Tomorrow we are going to celebrate Hanuman Jayanti across the state. I hope a large number of people will participate on this auspicious day.”
