Man arrested in Agra for raping 62-year-old American woman on pretext of marriage

A 32-year-old man was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Agra in connection with the rape of a 62-year-old US national on the pretext of marriage, the police on May 8. The accused, identified as Gagandeep, owns a homestay in Agra city.

According to the woman's complaint, she met the accused in 2017 when she visited Agra and stayed at Gagandeep's homestay.

"The woman stayed at the accused's homestay, where they began a relationship that continued for three years," said a police officer.

Over the years, the woman kept visiting India to meet Gagandeep. She also alleged that the accused had sexual relations with her under the pretext of marrying her.

The police stated that the accused took the US national to Shahdara and Amritsar. He even gave her a spiked drink that left her unconscious and stole 35 USD from her.

After years of the relationship, the victim discovered that Gagandeep was cheating on her and was married. As a result, she filed an FIR against the accused on May 5.

“We received a complaint that he raped the woman on the pretext of marrying her. On May 5, the complainant approached police in Delhi, then she was sent for counselling. The accused’s location was traced and he was arrested,” said DCP (Shahdara) Rohit Meena.

The Delhi Police lodged a case under IPC sections pertaining to rape, causing hurt by means of poison among others.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
