Earthquake in Jhajjar, 2nd in less than 24 hours; tremors felt in Delhi

A medium-intensity earthquake hit Haryana's Jhajjar Monday, less than 24 hours after another quake struck the region, the National Centre For Seismology said.

The quake, measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale, struck at 6.28 am at a depth of 10 km. Tremors were also felt in the national capital, it said.

Another medium-intensity earthquake had hit the same location Sunday.

Vineet Kumar Gahalaut, the director of the NCS, said Delhi and its nearby areas are situated on the top of fault lines and fall in seismic Zone IV.

"This is why we see small and medium-intensity quakes in Rohtak, Jhajjar, Sohna, Panipat, and their impact is felt in Delhi," he said.

The Himalayan region, the northeast and the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago fall in Zone V of the seismic map of the country and these areas record a high number of seismic activities.
