Severe cyclonic storm that hit the Tamil Nadu coast yesterday, the Cyclone Gaza has killed 11 persons and the storm is reaching the inland of the state.
“Just got information that 11 persons have died because of Gaja Cyclone till now. Government to give 10 lakh rupees to the kin of the deceased, 1 lakh rupees to those severely injured & 25 thousand to those who received minor injuries,” says Tamil Nadu CM E Palaniswamy.
CM Palaniswamy further added that, “Nagapattinam district has been heavily damaged by #GajaCyclone. In total, 471 relief camps have been established in which 81,948 ppl are staying. We"ll seek assistance from central govt after assessment is done by our officials in the affected areas.”
The IMD bulletin at 8am has said that the “severe cyclonic storm” has now weakened to “cyclonic storm” and will cross Nagapattinam at 12:30 am on Friday and it has carried out the major devastation in this district itself.
Nagapattinam district has been vastly damaged by the cyclone and the rainfall that was recorded at 48.4 mm, other districts that have been affected are Karaikal, which is under Puducherry.
The bulletin released by the IMD had said, “The Cyclonic storm ‘GAJA’ over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved further west-southwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 2330 hrs IST of 14 th November, 2018 over Southwest Bay of Bengal near latitude 12.0°N and longitude 83.8°E, about 410 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 450 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu). It is very likely to move west-southwestwards and intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours. While moving west-southwestwards thereafter, it is likely to weaken and cross Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Cuddalore, around Nagapattinam during 15th November evening as a Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph,” as reported by zeenews.
