Chinese company won contract to print 'Indian' currency, claims report; Congress attack PM Modi government

The Chinese company, China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation claims that it has won the contract and has been given the license to print Indian currency notes along with several other nations. The opposition party launched a scathing attack on PM Modi government seeking a clarification from his government.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared a post on Twitter and questioned Union Ministers, Arun Jaitley and Piyush Goyal on the matter. "If true, this has disturbing national security implications. Not to mention making it easier for Pak to counterfeit. @PiyushGoyal @arunjaitley please clarify!"

The South China Morning Post report claims that the China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation has been running to full capacity, despite registering a fall in the local demand owing to a rise in mobile payments in the recent years, reported TOI.

Congress spokesperson Randeep S Surjewala asked if it is part of China's design to engulf Southeast Asia. He tweeted, “Is ‘China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation’ printing currency for Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka? Is this Dragon’s new design to engulf South East Asia? Have the Chinese been given a contract to print Indian currency notes? If so, it’s a grave breach of National Security.”

The report further claimed that the actual number of countries, who have given a contract to the company to print their currency notes, may be much larger. "But that could be just the tip of the iceberg," it read.
