Weather update: West Bengal, Odisha on alert; rainfall likely in these states

The India Meterological Department [IMD] has issued a warning of heavy rainfall at isolated areas in Maharashtra for the coming 48 hours. Showers lashed parts of Mumbai on Monday night and water-logging was witnessed in Mumbai's Sion neighbourhood following rainfall.

A yellow alert has been put out in Mumbai as the city witnessed moderate rains on Monday with parts of the city being flooded.

Dr Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather Forecast Department, IMD Pune said, "For the next 48 hours, very heavy rainfall may occur at isolated places in Maharashtra. There will be Cumulonimbus cloud formation at Pune and Ahmednagar district border and widespread rainfall is expected over the next four days".

The regional weather agency of Dehradun has issued a yellow alert for Pithoragarh, Champawat, Bageshwar and Nainital in Uttarakhand. An orange alert has been sounded for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated areas of Uttarakhand starting September 14 to 16. The weather agency have warned people staying near rivulets and river streams to keep away.

Intense rainfall is expected to continue over South Gujarat, North Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh during the coming five days, the IMD said.

Delhi witnessed a hot and humid day on Monday as rain lashed parts of the city on the intervening night between Monday and Tuesday.

Normal life was hampered in south Bengal districts and parts of Odisha on Monday as rain prompted by a depression led to hardships to commuters on the first working day of the week.

The weather agency forecasted heavy rain in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, West Midnapore, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts of West Bengal till Wednesday morning.

It also warned of very heavy rain in the districts of East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Nadia till Tuesday and heavy rain thereafter till Wednesday.

The Met said heavy rainfall will carry on at isolated areas in Balangir, Kalahandi, Sonepur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Nuapada, and Keonjhar till Tuesday.

Bhubaneswar’s Regional Meteorological Centre Scientist U S Dash told news agency PTI the districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur and some areas in inner Odisha will continue to experience heavy rain.

He said parts of Odisha are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall at places owing to the system which is expected to move north-westwards and weaken slowly by Monday.

MET WARNS OF HEAVY RAINFALL IN RAJASTHAN:

Many parts of Rajasthan are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming two-three days, the IMD said on Monday.

A MeT office spokesperson told PTI there is a chance of light to moderate rain for the coming four-five days in most areas of east Rajasthan because of the effect of this system. Whereas during the September 13-15 period, there is a possibility of heavy rain at isolated areas in the districts of Kota, Jaipur, Udaipur and Bharatpur divisions.

Likewise, in the districts of Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions of western Rajasthan, light to moderate rain is expected at isolated areas for the next 3-4 days, he said.

RAINFALL LIKELY IN THESE STATES:

As maintained by the IMD, isolated heavy falls along with thunderstorm, lightning are expected in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa for the coming five days. East Rajasthan and Uttarakhand are also expected to receive heavy rainfall for the next few days, the weather agency said.

"Light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Telangana & Interior Karnataka on 12th; ghat areas of Tamilnadu on 12th & 13th and over Coastal Karnataka during 12th-14th September, 2022. Isolated very heavy rainfall also likely over Coastal Karnataka and ghat areas of Tamilnadu on 12th September, 2022," IMD said.

The state of Jharkhand is being battered by incessant rains for the last 24 hours after a deep depression over Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, which has lowered its rain deficit this season to 25 per cent, the IMD said.

The rainfall is expected to wither after Tuesday but sporadic rainfall might carry on till September 14 because of the influence of a trough line, an IMD official said.
