Tamil Nadu: 24-year-old man brutally lynched for defecating in field, seven held
A Dalit man (24) was brutally lynched by a mob after he allegedly defecated in an open field that belonged to a person from a dominant caste in Villupuram town in Tamil Nadu. The victim, identified as Sakthivel, worked in a petrol pump.
A video of the incident shows Sakyhivel being brutally thrashed by locals in a hamlet in Villupuram. The police made arrests after the clip went viral. A complaint was also registered by victim’s sister at a local police station.
As per the complaint lodged by Shaktivel’s sister, he was attacked after he defecated in an open field that belonged to a dominant caste of people. She alleged that the mob became aggressive after they came to know that he was a Dalit.
Sakthivel’s sister stated that she got a phone call from her brother for help, who told her that he was being attacked. She rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Shaktivel with the help of police. But the victim lost consciousness on reaching home and died.
Seven people were taken into custody on Friday under five sections of the Indian Penal Code, including punishment of murder and under prevention of Atrocities Against SC/ST Act.
Thol. Thirumavalavan, leader of Dalit outfit VCK, visited the victims family and later demanded action against those responsible.
