Punjab: Sarabjit Singh's wife dies in road mishap
Sukhpreet Kaur, the wife of Sarabjit Singh who was killed in 2013 in a Lahore jail, died in an accident on September 12. The incident took place in Bhikhiwind town, near Tarn Taran district.
As per Sarabjit Singh’s daughter Swapandeep Kaur, her mother was travelling on a motorcycle when she accidentally fell from it. She was going to Jalandhar. Kaur was then admitted to hospital where she succumbed to injuries yesterday. Her cremation will be performed today.
Sarabjit Singh was a farmer from Bhikhiwind town in Punjab, who used to live near the India-Pakistan border, and who mistakenly crossed the border while he was drunk. However, he was sentenced to death by a Pakistan court in 1991.
Singh was held in the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore for 22 years. There, he was brutally thrashed by his inmates and was taken to hospital. Following the attack on him on the jail premises in 2013, Singh remained comatose for five days before being declared dead by doctors at Lahore's Jinnah Hospital. He had suffered significant head injuries.
During Sarabjit Singh’s imprisonment, his older sister Dalbir Kaur fought against the system to release her brother. She always insisted that her brother was innocent and crossed the border by mistake. She also went to Pakistan to see her brother.
The Indian Government had asked the Pakistan Government to initiate a probe into Singh's death, while his sister, Dalbir Kaur had also called for an inquiry into the case. She also passed away in June this year.
