Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein out on $1m bail; see Twitterati's reaction

Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein who is accused by more than 50 women of sexual harassment, assault and inappropriate behaviour surrerdered yesterday in New York. He was taken under custody, but was soon out on $1 million bail.

He was seen in handcuffs under the custody of New York City police officers, who took him to the court. After he got arrested, it gave rise to the #MeToo movement.

Weinstein looked glum during a brief arraignment, agreeing to post bail at $1 million cash, surrender his passport and be fitted with a GPS monitoring device.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office said he was charged with rape in the first and third degrees, stemming from an attack on a woman in 2013, and a criminal sex act against another woman in 2004.

"Today's charges reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation," said District Attorney Cyrus Vance, thanking "brave survivors" for coming forward and urging others to call a sex crimes hotline.

Defense attorney Ben Brafman told reporters that Weinstein would plead not guilty and that his client denied any non-consensual sexual activity.

"We intend to move very quickly to dismiss these charges," Brafman said. "Bad behavior is not on trial," he added. "Mr Weinstein did not invent the casting couch in Hollywood."

A lot of women and people were happy to see Harvey in handcuffs. Although, their hopes were shattered when the producer was out on bail by just giving out a huge cheque.

“You start to think there’s no justice in the world, and then Harvey Weinstein and Tommy Robinson get arrested on the same day,” said a Twitter user. “So Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein are both arrested! Think you could pick up the music industry’s bad guys while your at it! 1.6 million bail! Ha. Thank you for some justice finally,” said another.
