Sarfraz Ahmed removed from Pakistan captaincy, Babar Azam to replace him as T20 skipper

Sarfaraz Ahmed, who has been under a scanner for quite some time now, has been turfed out as the captain of Pakistan cricket team from all formats according to the reports in Cricket Pakistan.

Recently, Pakistan lost the three match T20 series against Sri Lanka in Lahore after which the pressure increased on the wicket-keeper. Pakistan, who is ICC’s number one ranked T20 team, was expected to sail through the visiting Sri Lanka team, who were without their key players.

However Pakistan slumped to a scrappy series whitewash and were found waiting every time while chasing the target.

Previously, Sarfaraz had failed in the World Cup 2019 where Pakistan could not advance beyond the league stages. After the defeat against Sri Lanka, reports surfaced that Sarfaraz may lose the captaincy. The Pakistan Cricket Board continued with him following the World Cup fiasco, but they have now run out of patience with Sarfaraz.

Misbah-ul-Haq, who took over after the World Cup, wasn’t happy with Sarfaraz. It was established that he was not happy with Sarfaraz’s slant of abdicating his duties in the hour of need. It was also discovered that Misbah had a talk with the PCB chief executive Wasim Khan and expressed his vexation over Sarfaraz.

Meantime, reports regarding who should succeed Sarfaraz did the rounds. There were over Mohammad Hafeez becoming the limited overs skipper with Azhar Ali as the Test skipper. Such has been the furor over Sarfaraz that a journalist slammed him in a press conference during the National T20 Cup.

Sri Lanka series thumping has certainly rung the bell in the Pakistan camp. Their next undertaking is the tour of Australia where the team will engage in three T20Is and a couple of Tests, starting 3rd November.
