Mumbai Indians' coach Mahela Jayawardene likely to join team India

Former Sri Lanka cricketer and current Mumbai Indians’ coach Mahela Jayawardene seems to be interested in taking over the Indian team’s mantle from current coach Ravi Shastri. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the current coaching team’s tenure for the upcoming West Indies tour but has invited applications for all the coaching positions.

Several former cricketers seem to be interested in becoming team India’s coach and the latest to join the group is Mahela Jayawardene. Mahela has been coaching the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians for the past three seasons and has helped them win the championship twice.

Some of the other candidates who are interested to take the responsibility of team India are former Sunrisers Hyderabad’s coach Tom Moody and 2011 India’s World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten.

The Cricket Advisory Committee led by former Indian skipper Kapil Dev will take the decision in this regard and will select the new coach for team India.

Team India will play a three-match T20I and ODI series against West Indies before playing a two-match Test series. The Test series will be part of the inaugural ICC Test Championship. India’s tour of West Indies will start from August 3.
