There is no doubt that Virat Kohli is the most popular cricketer on social media and one of the most popular sportsperson. But recently, former India skipper MS Dhoni left behind Virat, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Harbhajan Singh to create a unique social media record.
Chennai Super Kings captain became the most Tweeted about player during the Indian Premier League 2019 followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma. As per data, Twitter saw a record-breaking 27 million tweets related to IPL, a 44 percent increase over 2018 IPL related tweets.
During the IPL 2019, following players were the most Tweeted about – MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Andre Russell, Hardik Pandya, Chris Gayle, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and David Warner. It is interesting to note that, in the top 10 tweeted about players, three were foreigners. Russell on fifth, Gayle on seventh and Warner on tenth position.
Meanwhile, Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings was also leading the chart of most tweeted about teams, followed by Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders.
And the tweet that gained the highest likes and retweets was Hardik Pandya’s picture with MS Dhoni that he captioned, “My inspiration, my friend, my brother, my legend.”
MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings failed to defend their title as they lost to Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians by just 1 run. This was Dhoni’s ninth IPL final and his eighth with CSK. Dhoni has met Rohit four times in the IPL finals and has lost all of them. Chennai Super Kings finished at number two on the points table. Coach Stephen Fleming hinted at possible squad reshuffle before IPL 2020.
