Streets in Sri Lanka lit up as they stunned the host and the tournament favourites England by 20 runs in the ongoing edition of the World Cup.
Sri Lanka so far have had a convincing campaign in the World Cup 2019 than expected. The team will be looking to keep their semi final hopes alive as the tournament intensifies.
Lasith Malinga who has been a key bowler for Sir Lanka has created a record of becoming the fastest player to take 50 wickets in the World Cup, in the match against England, he took four wickets and conceded only 43 runs in his 10 overs spell. Defending the paltry total of 232 runs, Malanga gave Sri Lanka a perfect start as desired.
Taking the wickets of Jonny Birstow and james Vince early, he put Sri Lanka on the front foot. Later in the 31st over, the pacer took the wicket of the man in form Joe Root and then went on to dismiss Jos Butller.
With this flawless match winning display, Lasith Malinga has 51 wickets to his name in the World Cup. He became only the fourth bowler to take fifty or more wickets in the World Cup. Glenn McGrath, Muttiah Muralitharan and Wasim Akram are others who have achieved this milestone. He also became the fastest amongst the three to reach the landmark.
With this victory, Sri Lanka preserved their 20 years unbeaten run against England in world Cups.
