Poison Garden, dubbed 'world's deadliest garden', has plants that can kill
A garden in England is termed as the 'world's deadliest garden', it consists of plants that can literally kill you. But you can visit it, of course, only in the company of a guide.
The Poison Garden is just a tiny section of The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland, however, it is deadly. The intoxicating garden is guarded by massive iron gates and a sign under a skull and crossbones that says, "these plants can kill you".
Visitors to the poison garden must be escorted by a guide. They are prohibited from smelling, touching or tasting any kind of plants.
A lot of tourists in the past have lost their consciousness after they inhaled the fumes while walking around the garden.
The Poison Garden is home to more than 100 'toxic, intoxicating, and narcotic' plants. One of the plants in the garden is the monkshood, which have pretty blue flowers and create deadly berries, leaves and stems.
While other plants, such as Laurel, produce cyanide, the garden is also home to some phototoxic plants like giant hogweed. Phototoxic plants burn skin and can give you blisters for up to seven years.
The workers in the garden have to sport hazmat suits to maintain the deadly plants.
This unusual garden was the idea of the Duchess of Northumberland who did not want to have a typical herb garden and decided to go for a poison garden instead.
Head Gardener, Trevor Jones, told Mirror, "They're very common plants. In fact, a lot of them are what we call cottage garden plants and they're grown in many people's gardens but people don't know how harmful they actually are. People are intrigued by poisonous plants and I'm often very worried when they come out because many of them will be growing these plants at home and they don't realise the powerful impact plants can have on us as humans."
