The customs officials at Kolkata airport arrested a man trying to fly to Bangkok with $40,000 bills (over Rs 32 lakh) concealed inside hundreds of sealed 'gutkha’ sachets.
The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers of the Kolkata Customs department on January 8 intercepted a flier after getting information that he was flying with thousands of US Dollar bills hidden inside gutkha pouches. The man was arrested after the immigration formalities.
When the customs officers searched his checked-in baggage, they found $40,000 (worth Rs 32,78,000) packed as two ten-dollar bills each inside the sachets.
The Customs Department also shared the video of the recovery, in which an officer can be seen tearing off Gutkha sachets and showing neatly folded $10 bill pairs sealed in aluminium foil. A big trolley bag filled to the brim with sachets could also be seen.
“Acting on intelligence #AIUofficers intercepted a pax scheduled to depart to Bangkok on 08.01.23 after immigration formalities. Search of his checked-in baggage resulted in recovery of US $40O00 (worth ₹3278000) concealed inside Gutkha pouches,” the department tweeted.
