Delhi shivers as mercury drops

New Delhi: The inclement weather and cold wave conditions gripped the national capital in the early hours of Monday accompanied by a temperature dip and chilly winds.

As per the data of the India Meteorological Department, Delhi recorded 11.4 degrees Celsius at 5.30 am on Monday. The MeT Department has predicted the minimum temperature for the day is 11 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 18 degrees Celsius.

IMD forecasts cloudy skies with light rain
The IMD has also predicted a "generally cloudy sky with light rain" for the city on Monday, adding to the cold wave conditions in the capital.

Homeless seek refuge in crowded night shelters
As the temperature plummeted, many homeless individuals sought refuge in night shelters. Locations such as Yamuna Bazar, near Kashmere Gate, and AIIMS saw full occupancy. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has set up 235 pagoda tents across the city.

Air quality remains 'very poor' despite improvements
The air quality in Delhi continued in the 'very poor' category, with the AQI recorded at 316 at 6 am. While the CAQM revoked Stage-III restrictions under GRAP due to improvements, Stage-I and Stage-II measures remain in effect.

Favourable conditions bring hope for better air quality
The Sub-Committee on GRAP noted a downward trend in AQI levels owing to favourable meteorological conditions. The forecast suggests AQI levels may remain in the 'poor' category in the coming days, offering some respite to residents.
