National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released the report on Monday wherein Delhi has topped the list in terms of crime against women among other metros such as Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. As per data, Delhi reported 11,542 cases of crime against women in 2017.
In the recent report released by NCRB, Delhi has witnessed a drop in crime against women since 2017 however, they remain several times higher. According to reports Kolkata had 1,975 cases, Bengaluru reported 3,565 and in Mumbai 5,453 cases in 2017.
NCRB report also shows that Delhi witnessed 1050 Indian Penal Code (IPC) crime cases per lakh of the city’s population. And in terms of the whole nation, it's up to 2,32,066 cases in 2017. Also as per recent data, heinous cases declined in 2017 in comparison to the previous years.
When asked DCP Randhawa on Delhi being compared to other cities in terms of crime against women, he said, “ “There is free and fair registration of crime across all police stations in Delhi. Also, you must look at the population difference. In Delhi, we have launched several mobile-based applications for women safety such as Himmat and Himmat Plus which helps women alert police in distress immediately.”
Also, Delhi police spokesperson Mandeep Randhawa, deputy commissioner of police said, “We have controlled heinous crimes in Delhi. We have installed CCTV cameras for women’s safety. We conduct a safety audit of all paying guest accommodations, colleges and spaces which are frequently visited by women. Our officers are in touch with civic agencies to ensure that there are no dark spots in the city. This helps in ensuring women’s safety.”
