Addicted to Likes and Irrelevant Content: The Mental Health Crisis Among Youth

Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh) : In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, particularly among the youth. According to a recent study, the average youth spends around 6-8 hours a day on their smartphones, which has led to a plethora of mental health issues. This excessive usage has resulted in depression, anxiety, and loneliness, among other problems.

Isolation from Society and Family

Youth today are spending more time on social media, averaging around 6-8 hours a day, which is resulting in a sense of isolation from society and family. The excessive use of social media is also leading to unnecessary feelings of sadness and depression. Research suggests that the risk of depression increases by 7% and anxiety by 20% due to Facebook usage.

Physical Inactivity

Another significant issue arising from excessive social media usage is the decline of physical activities. This has led to an increase in obesity, sleep disorders, and lethargy. A recent study found that social media usage has also resulted in an increase in suicide cases.

Youth: Victims of Violence, Fraud, and Cruelty

The excessive usage of social media has also led to an increase in instances of violence, fraud, and cruelty among youth. According to a report, every fifth youth exhibits symptoms of violence, fraud, and cruelty. Social media has become an addiction, and excessive usage has led to a decrease in self-esteem, loneliness, and suicidal thoughts.

Expert Opinion

In today's technology-driven world, social media has taken over our lives, affecting our mental health. It is essential to take a break from social media and maintain a healthy distance. We should set aside at least one or two days a week as "social media-free" days and spend more time with family and friends.
