Australian batsman Hilton Cartwright was involved in one of the most bizarre dismissals the game of cricket has ever seen. The incident took place in a match between New South Wales and Western Australia in Sheffield Shield tournament when leg-spinner Jason Sangha decided to take on Cartwright.

Cartwright was at 3 runs after facing 45 balls when a half-tracker from Jason Sangha came into him. Cartwright rocked back and hit the ball for a pull shot which bounced back after hitting the helmet of short-leg fielder Nick Larkin. The ball went into the air for Sangha to claim an easy catch.

Larkin didn't seem to be in any discomfort after being hit flush on the helmet as Cartwright walked back to the pavilion in disbelief. Larkin was given the all clear after he was assessed by medical staff, while his helmet was replaced.

The wicket would not have stood prior to 2017 as the earlier laws would have ruled it a dead ball as it struck a fielder’s helmet before the ball was caught. The rule was introduced by Cricket Australia (CA) for its domestic competitions in the 2016-17 season, with the ICC following suit for international matches 12 months later.
