In an unbelievable and first case in the history of the medical, an unborn baby was removed from the mother’s womb for the surgery and was later put back inside safely. This case is from the UK, where a 26-year-old pregnant woman has become one of the first in the state to have pioneering surgery on her baby's spine while it is still in the womb.

According to Dailymail, Bethan Simpson of Burnham in Essex was earlier advised to terminate her pregnancy when doctors found her baby had the birth defect spina bifida during her 20-week scan.

However, the mother-to-be Mrs Simpson and her husband denied to give up on her unborn baby and opted for foetal repair. In this surgery, doctors operate on the baby's spinal cord while it is still in its mother's uterus.

Simpson discovered her baby's head was not the right size during a routine scan. Following which she was sent to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, where doctors diagnosed the youngster with spina bifida.

'Fast forward 48 hours and we were in London having scans on her head and spine,' Mrs Simpson said. 'With that, we were told our little girl had spina bifida.

'We were offered continuing pregnancy, ending a pregnancy or a new option called foetal surgery – fixing her before she is born. We agreed to do it.'

And the surgery was successful and the baby was put back inside the womb safely. Now, Mrs Simpson is due to give birth to a baby girl in April.
