A couple faced severe backlash from netizens after they broke wedding rituals and traditions of Indian culture on their wedding day. The couple identified as Shardul Kadam and Tanuja.

Shardul had shown the courage to break the patriarchy by exchanging mangalsutra with his partner. Unsurprisingly, Shardul got brutally trolled for his act.

The picture of the couple was shared by a digital newspaper on social media and received more than 82,000 'likes' on Instagram and thousands more on Facebook.

While speaking to Humans of Bombay, Shardul said he was so happy and revealed why he chose to wear a mangalsutra.

Telling about his love story, Shardul said that he and Tanuja met in a college, however, their love story began four years after they graduated.

"We reconnected most unexpectedly. She'd shared a Himesh Reshammiya song on Instagram and captioned it as 'torture'-I replied back saying 'maha torture'...that's how we started talking," says Shardul.

When they started dating each other, they started talking about feminism and Shardul declared himself to be a hardcore feminist.

The couple dated for a year before they informed their parents. In September 2020, Shardul and Tanuja started planning their wedding.

Shardul asked that why only a girl has to wear a mangalsutra? He announced that he would also wear a mangalsutra on their wedding day.

His family was also surprised by his decision. However, Shardul was strong-headed that he will be going to wear the mangalsutra to represent equality.

What trollers said:

As the story of Shardul and Tanuja story went viral, social media users started commenting, “'This is not the way to support gender equality.”

Some people trolled Shardul by saying, “Now wear a saree also', 'Do you bleed once a month?”

However, Shardul was sure that some people will definitely troll him, but the extent of it left him stunned.

Earlier, his wife was affected by the trolls, but now they are done with the trolls and didn’t pay attention to it.
