Daughter decapitates mum before cutting out her tongue, eyeballs found not guilty of murder
A woman who decapitated her own mother has been found not guilty of murder.
27-year-old, Jessica Camilleri, was instead found guilty of manslaughter after arguing that she was mentally unstable in the time of attack.
Jessica stabbed her 57-year-old mother Rita up to 200 times in Australia’s Sydney, in July 2019, cutting out her tongue, eyeballs and nose.
Police were called after reports of an argument between two women and found Rita's body in the kitchen of her residence, while her head was disposed in a neighbour's yard.
Jessica Camilleri allegedly asked if her mother could be brought back to life if her head was reattached and her heart restarted.
Legal Prosecutor Tony McCarthy said to the jury that Jessica said: "I just kept stabbing and stabbing and stabbing her, I took off her head."
The court also listened to how the accused allegedly had a history of harassing and repeatedly threatening people over the phone, including threats to severing their heads with a knife.
Camilleri’s sister, Kristy Torrisi, told the court that she had previously attacked an aunt and her mother-in-law by ripping out their hair.
"The accused had a lengthy history of assaulting people. Some involved random victims and others family members" Tony McCarthy said.
The court were also told that Jessica Camilleri was intrigued with violent movies, which included The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Jeepers Creepers.
Rita was very eager to help her daughter that she paid a medium $2,500 to “get the demon out” of her, a court heard.
Jessica Camilleri was diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, a "mild to moderate" intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder.
Camilleri’s lawyers stated that she was going through a mental impairment caused by a psychiatric illness at the time of the killing.
Following the crime, she called the emergency services and told them she was acting in self-defence.
According to Camilleri, her mother had held her by the hair, dragged her to the kitchen and tried to stab her first, ABC News reports.
Jessica Camilleri is set to be sentenced in February 2021.
