Watch: Violent protests erupt at Foxconn iPhone plant in China’s Zhengzhou

Several videos surfaced on the internet on November 23 from Foxconn's (2317.TW) flagship iPhone plant in China’s Zhengzhou showing hundreds of workers protesting and getting into violent altercations with security personnel.

As per Bloomberg, the workers were protesting against Covid-19 restrictions and unpaid wages.

The massive protest erupted due to delay bonus payments, reported Reuters. Since the Apple Inc (AAPL.O) supplier imposed a so-called closed loop system at the world's largest iPhone plant in late October, workers have fled the factory campus out of dissatisfaction with the company's strict quarantine rules, its inability to stop outbreaks, and poor working conditions, including food shortages, Reuters reported.

Under closed-loop operations, the employees live and work on-site isolated from the world.

Around 200,000 workers were employed by the Zhengzhou facility prior to the unrest. Foxconn had to provide bonuses and greater pay in order to keep its employees and recruit new ones.

Some videos showed protesters pulling down barriers setup to quarantine areas and arguing with hazmat-suited personnel. The barriers were set up to quarantine areas as part of ‘zero-covid policy’ of China.

Notably, Foxconn is the biggest iPhone maker company of Apple. It supplies 70 percent iPhone shipments across the world. It makes most of the phones at the Zhengzhou plant.
