Indonesia Plane crash: Human remains found after Lion Air flight carrying 189 crashes into sea; no sign of survivors
An Indonesian plane, Lion Air flight JT610 carrying 189 passengers on board crashed into the sea minutes after the take-off from Jakarta. The aircraft sank into the sea 13 minutes after taking off from the capital on a domestic flight to a tin-mining region, officials said.
The human remains have been recovered from the crash site about 15 km (9 miles) off the coast rescue officials said adding there was no sign of any survivors from Lion Air flight JT610, an almost new Boeing 737 MAX 8.
Indonesia search and rescue says 'likely' all 189 aboard crashed Lion Air jet dead, reports ANI.
According to a rescue agency, the ground controllers lost contact with the plane 13 minutes after take-off, and a tugboat leaving the capital's port saw it fall into the sea.
The accident took place while flying from Jakarta to Pangkalpinang, according to the nation’s rescue agency. Meanwhile, the crash information has been confirmed by the spokesman for the agency via text message to Reuters. The plane was commanded by Indian Captain Suneja and co-pilot Harvino with six cabin crew members.
"We don't know yet whether there are any survivors," search and rescue agency head Muhammad Syaugi told a news conference, adding that no distress signal had been received from the aircraft's emergency transmitter. "We hope, we pray, but we cannot confirm,” he added.
Indonesia is one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, although its safety record is patchy. If all aboard have died, the crash would be the country's second-worst air disaster since 1997, industry experts said.
