Hurricane Irma update: Ten killed in Cuba

At least ten people have lost their lives in Cuba after Hurricane Irma passed over the northern portion of the Caribbean island over the weekend.

Most casualties occurred mainly due to building collapses, the CNN reported.

Despite Havana being far from where Irma first hit, the city has suffered severe flooding and widespread wind damage.

The storm crashed into Cuba late on Friday, with sustained winds of than 157 miles per hour (253 km per hour).

The Cuba Civil Defence has issued a list of all the victims, in which the oldest victim was 89-year-old Nieves Martínez Burgaleta, who lived in old Havana. Her body was found floating outside her front door after water entered her house.

However, Hurricane Irma has downgraded to a Category 1 storm and has flooded several northern Florida cities with heavy rain and high storm surge on Monday as it headed out of the state after cutting power to millions and ripping roofs off houses.

Hurricane Irma has left a trail of destruction and deaths across the Caribbean and prompted large scale evacuations in the American history.

The overall death toll has risen from Irma's powerful rampage through the Caribbean to 38.
