Foreign terror suspect brought to U.S. for trial

An Algerian terror suspect from Spain has been brought to the United States by the President Donald Trump administration, to be tried in federal court rather than at the Guantanamo Bay naval prison.

CNN quoted the Justice Department as saying that Ali Charaf Damache was extradited from Spain and arrived in Philadelphia on Friday, where he made an initial appearance in court on charges of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.

According to the report, he was accused of conspiring with three others to recruit men to wage violent jihad in Europe and South Asia and of organizing a violent jihad organization.

Damache is alleged to have conspired with an American citizen Colleen LaRose who was convicted and is serving time in prison for ploting to kill a Swedish cartoonist who depicted the Prophet Muhammad in cartoons.

He was prosecuted in the US federal court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, where Damache is now facing charges.

Damache has become the first foreigner brought to the U.S. to face terrorism charges under President Donald Trump.

Earlier Both President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions had said that terror suspects should be held and tried at Guantanamo instead of facing charges in civilian courts.
