Apple is slowing-down these old iPhone models; is your iPhone affected too?

It's been quite some time since the conspiracy theory – Apple is deliberately slowing down old iPhones – is doing circles in the world markets. It is claimed in these theories that the reason behind such a move is to force old customers to buy a new iPhone.

This long suspected view gained a huge momentum last week when Apple confirmed in a statement that an update to iPhone is expected to slow down some of the iPhone models as this would prevent their old batteries from shutting down suddenly. However, the company rejected the claim that it's an elaborated scheme to sell more devices.

Coming from the horse's mouth, many Apple customers are disappointed with the company as the feature was not disclosed while releasing the iOS upgrade a year back. Seeking strict action, two iPhone users have sued the company while claiming that this unexpected slow-down in the device has harmed them economically and otherwise.

However, not all iPhone users are impacted by this version update as there can be some other reasons for the phone slowing down too.

Mahindra group's chairman, Anand Mahindra, also shared to have experienced a smiler issue in his iPhone 6. He tweeted on Wednesday, “I’m afraid I experienced this too with my old iPhone 6 before I switched to the X. It was frustrating and none of our IT folks could explain or solve it.”

Why may An iOS update slow down your iPhone?

Last year, Apple released an iOS update that slows down the iPhones if the processing is putting too much pressure on the battery. The update was said to be launched in response to complaints from some iPhone users that their phones had started shutting down suddenly, even when a significant amount of battery was remaining. While critics have been saying that the issue could have been handled better through a number of other ways, the company is firm on its stand that it's just a solution to a known issue, not a pre-planned ploy.

Has your iPhone slowed-down due to this update?

Not all iPhones are affected by this power-management update as the company says that only certain models are affected. The upgraded software was launched by the company last year for models like iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S Plus. Later on, the update was included in iOS 11.2, which was carried to iPhone7 and 7 Plus.

This means, if you have an iPhone model which is a predecessor of iPhone 6, it is not likely to be affected by this software update. The same holds true for iPhone 8 and the later versions. Here are some possible solutions to your iPhone's slow performance, if it is not affected by Apple's upgrade:

1. A complete upgrade of apps

2. Update to latest iOS

3. Clear-up some additional memory

4. Delete apps that you don't use

5. Backup space consuming content like videos on a cloud with the like of Google, Dropbox etc.

6. Turn off background apps

7. Battery replacement if phone is under warranty

8. Stop charging phone battery overnight
