Today is the 131st birth anniversary of CV Raman or Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman who won the first Asian Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 for discovering the Raman Effect. He was a Nobel laureate, an imminent Physicist and Bharat Ratna.
The renowned scientist was born on November 7, 1888, in Trichy. He passed away on November 21, 1970.
Notably, February 28 is celebrated as National Science Day to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’.
CV Raman's interest was not restricted to the world of science but also the love of music.
On his 131st birth anniversary, we have brought some interesting facts about the prominent Physicist.
1. CV Raman qualified class 10th at the age of 11 years and also attended school on a scholarship at the age of 13.
2. In 1902, he joined the Presidency College in Madras where his father became lecturer mathematics and physics.
3. He also resigned from his government job in 1917 after appointed as the first Palit Professor of Physics at the University of Calcutta.
4. Raman was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1928. But, he lost to Owen Richardson in that year. In 1929, once again, he lost another Nobel Prize of Physics to Louis de Broglie.
5. CV Raman discovered the evidence of the quantum nature of light, which later known as Raman Effect in 1928. From 28 February, the day has been celebrated as National Science Day in India.
6. In 1932, Raman accompanied by Suri Bhagavantam discovered the quantum photon spin.
7. Raman was also obsessed with working on the acoustics of musical instruments and was also the first to investigate the harmonic nature of the sounds of Indian drums.
8. In 1954, he was awarded a Bharat Ratna.
