Donald Trump 'danger to democracy': Democrats seek support of Republicans to impeach President
Days before the full House vote, top Democrats have made concerted efforts to seek the support of Republicans to help impeach US President Donald Trump. Democrats hope that some Republicans may cross party lines and side with them during the voting on impeachment.
Donald Trump poses a "clear and present danger" to democracy, said Democrat Adam Schiff.
Although Democrats control the House but are almost certain to lose in the Senate, which is in Republican hands.
President Trump is being accused of soliciting a foreign country to help him politically, by trying to force Ukraine to launch a corruption investigation into his Democratic rival Joe Biden.
Donald Trump has denied any wrongdoing. He has called the House investigation a "witch hunt" and predicted it will even benefit him in next year's presidential election.
Although it's not clear how this impeachment proceeding might impact President Trump's political career, many believe that there is a good possibility that Trump might successfully play a victim card. Since it is almost certain that Trump is not going to be impeached, many consider the whole process a waste of time and resources. But those in favour of impeachment argue the necessity to protect the constitution and the reputation of the President of the United States.
