WFI suspends 'Dangal Sisters' for 'tantrums and indiscipline' from national camp

The face of Indian wrestling and famously known by the term 'Phogat Sisters' whose story was showcased in the blockbuster Bollywood movie Dangal, have all been thrown out from the national camp for the Asian Games and the wrestling fans are in a huge shock.

The Wrestling Federation of India got tired of their alleged “tantrums and indiscipline” has dropped all the four sisters Geeta, Babita, Ritu and Sangeeta from the Asian Games.

They will not be allowed to take part in the Asiad trials scheduled for later this month which would effectively end up in closing their dream of representing their country. The trials are only for the players who are a part to the national camp.

Interestingly, this is not the first time when one of Phogat sisters got into trouble for not acting in a disciplined manner and WFI have been earlier criticized for not taking actions against Geeta and Babita for similar incidents in the past. However, the federation has acted strictly this time make its stand clear. In the latest act of indiscretion – the girls went on to skipping the national camp in Lucknow made mandatory by the federation to prepare for the Games.

A total of 15 men and women freestyle wrestlers have been served with the show-cause notice by the WFI and their names removed from the list of national camp.

“It looks all of them are not taking the camp seriously. This is a gross breach of discipline on their part because the federation is struggling to ensure enough sparring partners at the women’s camp. This is not acceptable. We have immediately removed these offenders from the Lucknow and Sonepat camps. Moreover, they won’t be allowed to appear for the Asian Games trials,” Said a WFI representative.

WFI has also said that the defaulters did not even inform the federation about their absence, had they done this, they could have accommodated other wrestlers to train.

WRESTLERS AXED FROM NATIONAL CAMP: Ritu Phogat (50kg), Indu Choudhary (50kg), Sangeeta Phogat (57kg), Geeta Phogat (59kg), Ravita (59kg), Pooja Tomar (62kg), Manu (62kg), Nandini Salokhe (62kg), Reshma Mane (62kg), Anju (65kg), Manu Tomar (72kg), Kamini (72kg), Babita Phogat (53kg), Shravan (61kg) and Satyawart Kadian (97kg).
