Who is Disha Ravi arrested by Delhi police? Know her connection with Greta Thunberg

The Delhi Police have taken climate activist Disha Ravi into custody for allegedly posting the toolkit linked to the farmers protest against government’s farm laws on social media. The 22-year-old was arrested by the Delhi Police cyber cell from her residence in Bengaluru on Saturday.

The police have alleged that Disha was the one who posted the toolkit with Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and that she was the prime conspirer in the making and dissemination of the file that “indicates a copycat execution of a conspiracy behind the Republic Day violence.” the Delhi Police through a tweet stated that, “She started WhatsApp Group & collaborated to make the Toolkit doc. She worked closely with them to draft the Doc.”

Another tweet from the Delhi Police stated that, “In this process, they all collaborated with pro Khalistani Poetic Justice Foundation to spread disaffection against the Indian State.”

Furthermore, they said that Ravi later told Greta to delete the main document after its details by a mere chance got into the public sphere. “This is many times more than the 2 lines editing that she claims,” the Delhi Police said through a tweet.

Who is Disha Ravi? How is she linked with Greta Thunberg?

Disha is a graduate from Bengaluru’s Mount Carmel College. She is a member of a climate activist circle known as Fridays for Future, which was established by Greta Thunberg in 2018. Disha began the India wing for the organization in 2019 and she also heads it.

Furthermore the activist has coordinated many campaigns across India on climate change. Disha also organised protests in Bengaluru on climate issues and wrote in various media across the world on its unfavourable impacts.

What motivated Disha?

Her inspiration to become a climate activist came from looking at her grandparents, who are farmers and struggle with the impact of climate change, the 22-year-old said in an interview with Auto Report Africa in 2020.

“She was very vocal about her views on climate change and the issues she felt about strongly,” a friend of Disha Ravi told Hindustan Times.

Disha Ravi has been charged for sedition, promoting enmity and criminal conspiracy over her alleged complicity in the 'toolkit' being probed by the Delhi Police. A court on Sunday remanded the climate activist to 5 days in police custody.

What is a toolkit?

It is a social media document which elucidates a matter in question and action plans. Greta Thunberg had tweeted it while she lent her support to the ongoing farmers protest. Earlier, the ministry of electronics and information technology had told Twitter that the toolkit was proof that a strong social media campaign was being planned outside India and Twitter was one of its platforms for mobilisation.
