US President Donald Trump omits Hindus in Diwali celebration tweet and gets trolled online
The US President Donald Trump lit a lamp in the White House, while celebrating Diwali whereas the festival was celebrated last week in India.
But, interestingly, in the tweet which Donald Trump shared, he mentioned Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains but omitted the Hindus from it. The initial tweet from the Donald Trump had stated this but later on he checked it and corrected it as well.
He had mentioned “a holiday observed by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains” and omitted the dominant religion which celebrates the festival.
Earlier in the day, Trump tweeted: “Today, we gathered for Diwali, a holiday observed by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains throughout the United States & around the world.”
The photos that were tweeted by Trump, had him lighting up a ceremonial lamp in the Roosevelt Room at the White House, surrounded by people from the Indian community, who are part of the administration and various other committees.
While Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains do observe Diwali, Hindus are among the largest religious group to celebrate the holiday. More than 2 million people in the U.S. identify as Hindu, according to Pew, which projects there will be about 2.5 million Hindus by 2020. In a followup tweet, Trump said it was “my great honor to host a celebration of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights,” as reported by Time.
Diwali was celebrated in India on November 7 and it is celebrated as Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after a 14 years exile and conquering over Ravan in Lanka, as stated in the Ramayana.
