Triple Talaq: Here are the 5 women who fought hard for the controversial Muslim practice

The Supreme court of India today gave a historical verdict in Muslim practice of Triple talaq and termed it as "illegal, sinful and retrograde".

Three judges -Justices Kurian Joseph (Christian), RF Nariman (Parsi), UU Lalit (Hindu)- out of five termed the Triple Talaq as unconstitutional. Chief Justice JS Khehar (Sikh) and Abdul Nazeer (Muslim) had different views on the matter.

But there are five women who have played a key role in this matter:

1. Shayara Bano

A 35-year-old woman, who hails from Kashipur (Udham Singh Nagar district), Uttarakhand is the first one who had filed petition in the apex court regarding the matter.

Bano was given triple talaq in October 2015 after 15 years of marriage.

Bano told the court that this way of triple talaq is completely unconstitutional.

Bano was at her parents' house for treatment when her husband divorced her. In October 2015, Bano's husband sent her a letter of Triple Talaq through speed post.

2. Ishrat Jahan

Ishrat was divorced over phone from Dubai in April, 2015 and her 15 years of marriage relation ended. The problem for Ishrat was not only this but he took her four children with him against their wishes. With the help of a local non-governmental organization, Ishrat took her case to the Supreme Court.

3. Gulshan Parveen

The 31-years-old women was married in April 2013, and has encountered domestic violence for over two years. Gulshan of Rampur in UP had received her talaqnama from husband on a Rs 10 stamp paper when she was with her parents in 2015.

“I had no say. My husband felt like it one fine day and suddenly both my two-year-old son Ridan and I were homeless,” Gulshan was quoted by TOI.

4. Atiya Sabri

One day, Sabri found out that she had been divorced after her husband sent a letter to her brother's office in which he had written "talaq, talaq, talaq".

Sabri who got married in 2012 had filed a complaint with a Mahila Thana of Saharanpur stating that her in-laws were demanding Rs 25 lakh as dowry from her parents.

5. Afreen Rehman

Afreen Rehman, a modern Muslim woman was married to a lawyer in the northern city of Jaipur in 2014. She was divorced via speedpost.

"I wanted the marriage to work so I agreed," says Ms Rehman."But it didn't. There were frequent demands for dowry and bouts of violence, I slipped into depression."
