Triple Talaq Bill: Modi-led government to introduce Muslim Women Bill again in the Lok Sabha today
The Modi-led government will be going to introduce the triple talaq bill or the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 in the Lok Sabha today. However, in September, Narendra Modi government had passed an ordinance.
As per the law, an ordinance validity is only for six months from its promulgation. However, the ordinance has to be replaced by a bill within 42 days (six weeks) from the day the Parliament session begins. If the bill won’t pass then the ordinance lapses.
However, the Winter Session of Parliament was started on 11th December.
In case the bill would not pass then the government has the liberty to re-promulgate the ordinance through the Parliament.
Earlier, the triple talaq bill was introduced by the Modi government in Parliament.
Previously, Modi government had introduced a bill on triple talaq which was passed by the Lok Sabha but is pending in the Rajya Sabha, where NDA does not get the majority.
However, the opposition in the Rajya Sabha had suggested making some amendments to the bill. As a result, the government has come up with a new bill that will be going to introduce today.
The Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has spoken about the fresh bill that Supreme Court striking down the practice of instant triple talaq, termed it as an unconstitutional.
The government had also informed the Lok Sabha earlier in the Winter Session that till now 430 cases of triple talaq had come to light with the help of media.
As per the reports of news agency PTI, Of these, 229 were reported before the Supreme Court judgment, while another 201 came to the notice after it.
