SC serves show cause notice to Rahul Gandhi; seeks explanation on 'Chowkidar Chor hai' remark

The Supreme Court has served a show cause notice to Rahul Gandhi over a contempt plea filed by BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi and has sought an explanation from the Gandhi scion over his remark on PM Narendra Modi.

Rahul Gandhi, while jumping the gun had said, “ab to court ne bhi keh diya hai ki Chowkidar Chor hai,” and attributed it to the Supreme Court, while the latter never held it in its verdict.

News agency ANI tweeted, “The petitioner, BJP's Meenakshi Lekhi, has claimed in her petition 'the words used and attributed by him to SC in the Rafale case has been made to appear something else. He is replacing his personal statement as Supreme Court's order and trying to create prejudice'.”

Earlier, the Supreme Court while upholding the investigation by N. Ram’s The Hindu, had said that the evidence procured by the Prashant Bhushan led team and the Defence Ministries document were not stolen rather it was a master work of investigative journalism.

The Supreme Court has asked the Congress president to appear before the court on Monday, April 22 to explain as to why he attributed his comment on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the apex court never held it. The case of criminal contempt was filed by the BJP and the case is under senior lawyer Mukul Rohtagi.

Both the political parties, namely BJP and Congress, have come up with their own version of slogans regadring the Chowkidar word and it was the Congress which called ‘ Chowkidar chor hai,’ followed by the BJP’s ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar.’
