Rahul Gandhi is all set to take over Congress. For this, a huge program will be held at the Congress headquarters on Saturday.
Significantly, it is almost two decades later, when the Congress party will have its new party president. The current President, Sonia Gandhi, is managing the party since 1998.
It is worth mentioning that after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, the Congress had urged to Sonia Gandhi to take over the post of party, but she refused to accept it and said that she wants to stay away from politics.
Although Sonia assumed the primary membership of Congress in 1997 and she was elected Congress President in 1998. Since then she is the president of the Congress party. After winning the 2004 Lok Sabha election, Sonia was elected leader of the 16-party UPA coalition. In September 2010, she was elected the Congress president for the fourth time again. It is also the record of the Congress Party's 125-year history being the longest president.
