Smriti Irani condemns Azam Khan's sexist remark against Rama Devi and says, ‘We cannot remain silent spectators'

A massive uproar erupted in Lok Sabha on Friday over the Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan’s sexist remark against Rama Devi, BJP legislator. He has been slamming in the house for his controversial statement that he made on Thursday. Also, Union Minister Smriti Irani raised her voice and said that we can’t remain silent spectators to it.

Along with other women MPs, Union Textiles Minister Irani demanded to take strict action against Azam Khan.

“This is a blot on all legislators including men. We cannot remain silent spectators to it. We have to speak in one voice that this is unacceptable," Irani said.

"The entire nation watched yesterday what happened. This House passed the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Bill. I appeal to all to speak in one voice- You cannot misbehave with a woman and get away with it by just dramatizing it," she further added.

 

Women member in Lok Sabha spoke in one voice condemned the sexist remarks by Azam Khan and demanded an apology from him or else he should be punished from the House.

TMC MP Mimi Chakroborty also joined the row and said, “Nobody can stand in the Parliament and tell a woman "look into my eyes and talk." Speaker sir, all women here are expecting something big from you on this."

Also, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slammed Khan and said, “It is very encouraging to see everyone stand up and speak in once voice condemning what happened yesterday. We look towards you (LS Speaker) for exemplary action against him.”

The controversy in Lok Sabha erupted when Azam Khan made a shocking remark against Bihar MP Rama Devi during the debate of Triple Talaq Bill on July 25.
