'Seems like you got your powers back': CJI Ranjan Gogoi's jab at EC over strict action on hate speech

The Supreme Court while issuing a notice to the Election Commission had asked about the steps and measures taken against the hate mongering by the political leaders and the poll watchdog, in an overnight action, barred several political leaders from addressing rallies.

The Election Commission while taking severe action against the political leaders of different parties, asked UP CM Yogi Adityanath, BSP leader Mayawati, Union Minister Maneka Gnadhi and SP leader Azam Khan to restrict their campaigning for 2-3 days respectively as they were found guilty of breaching the model code of conduct.

The Election Commission’s representative had to appear in the apex court today, to explain about the action taken and the Supreme Court was satisfied with the stern action and said that no interim order would be passed as of now.

Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, while taking a jab at the Commission said, “It seems the Election Commission has woken up by our orders and barred various politicians from campaigning for varying timing. This makes it clear no further orders are required now. It seems like the commission has got its powers back.”

While rallying in Saharanpur’ Deoband district on April 7, Mayawati had called out the Muslim voters and warned them of not getting confused and not to waste their vote by giving it to the Congress party as it will create a split. The community was asked to vote for the SP-BSP-RLD alliance.

And, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had commented saying, “If you (Opposition) have faith in Ali, we have faith in Bajrangbali.”
