Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli has received the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from the government of India on Tuesday. Kohli has received the country’s highest sporting honour d from the President of India Ram Nath Kovind.
Kohli becomes the third Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar (1997) and MS Dhoni (2007) to get this privilege for receiving the award.
While in women’s cricket team, T20 vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has honoured with the Arjuna Award on Tuesday.
Kohli has been awarded for his contribution and performances for the team at International level. After receiving the prestigious award in his life, Kohli said he was ‘humbled’.
On the other hand, world champion weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was conferred with the Khel Ratna. Mirabai has received the award after becoming the world champion in the 48kg category.
Also, PM Modi has extended his wishes for Kohli on Twitter.
Modi wrote, "Dear @imVkohli, congratulations on being conferred the Khel Ratna. As a batsman and Captain, you have brought immense joy for the nation. Your popularity among young India is also tremendous. Best wishes for your future endeavours."
