Rajasthan: BSF jawans, Pak rangers exchange fire along international border

The jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers exchanged fire along the India-Pakistan International Border in Rajasthan on December 9 evening. The exchange of fire happened in the Anupgarh sector along the international border.

As per officials, no casualties have been reported on the Indian side.

After the incident, the BSP has called for a flag meeting with Pak rangers which is likely to be conducted today. The flag meeting will take place along the Anupgarh sector in the district of Sriganganagar.

As per a BSF spokesperson, the Pak rangers started the firing at around 2 pm yesterday. They fired 6-7 rounds at BSF jawans stationed at the border fence and guarding farmers as part of the "kisaan guard," -  meant to escort and protect five local farmers working in their farms.

“In retaliation, the BSF 'kisaan guard' party fired about 18 rounds on Pak Rangers,” the spokesperson said.

"A protest is being lodged, and a flag meeting has been called," the official said.

According to a senior officer, the exchange of fire between the troops along the Thar Desert is very rare.

Rajasthan is part of the Thar Desert, which extends through Gujarat, Punjab, and Jammu in front of the International Border.

Notably, in February 2021, India and Pakistan agreed on a complete ceasefire on this front. However, there have been one or two incidents of violation of the ceasefire reported since 2021, including one in September this year when Pak troops opened fire on a BSF patrol party in the Arnia sector of Jammu.
