Rahul Gandhi aplogises to SC on 'Chowkidar Chor hai' jibe: I wrongly attributed to my lord

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has apologised to the Supreme Court on Tuesday in the contempt of court case, saying 'I wrongly attributed to my lord.' Rahul Gandhi has been facing the heat of the Supreme Court for attributing the ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ jibe attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi government over the Rafale deal verdict.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi representing Rahul Gandhi in Supreme Court said,"I have wrongly attributed to my lord, that was my error."

The top court had pulled up Rahul Gandhi while hearing the contempt proceedings against him over his remark, saying the Congress president was trying to justify the comment that the court never made.

Mukul Rohatgi, lawyer of BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi told the top court that Rahul Gandhi deliberately put his words in court's mouth and has only expressed regret. 'He (Rahul Gandhi) deliberately put words in the mouth of SC, he has only expressed regret. Law is clear in contempt cases the line starts with unconditional apology.'

On which Singhvi said it was his mistake that the affidavit did not contain the word "apology" and a fresh one would be filed on the matter. "I have checked the dictionary, regret means an apology.  (But) I will say an apology," Singhvi told the court.

"We heard all. After extensive hearing, Singhvi wants to file additional affidavit. It is open for the respondent to file affidavit. The acceptance of any such affidavit will be considered on Monday," said the judges.

The court scheduled the hearing for May 6.
