Prashant Kishor takes a dig at BJP, says NRC is demonetisation of citizenship
Election strategist Prashant Kishor on Sunday took a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said the exercise of nation-wide National Register of Citizens (NRC) a “demonetization of citizenship”.
Taking to Twitter Kishor said: “The idea of nationwide NRC is equivalent to demonetisation of citizenship….invalid till you prove it otherwise. The biggest sufferers would be the poor and the marginalised…we know from the experience!!#NotGivingUp.”
Earlier, the poll strategist had said JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar is against nationwide NRC as it is 'discriminatory' when implemented alongside Citizenship Act.
"Disappointed to see JDU supporting #CAB that discriminates right of citizenship on the basis of religion. It's incongruous with the party's constitution that carries the word secular thrice on the very first page and the leadership that is supposedly guided by Gandhian ideals, " Kishor had tweeted.
His Tweet came after JD(U) supported the CAB in both the houses saying the bill was not discriminatory.
According to reports, Kishor had offered to resign during the meeting with JDU chief Nitish Kumar. After meeting with the JDU chief his personal stand on the CAB remained unchanged.
Worth mentioning here that, CAB seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees coming from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan after facing religious persecution. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with 311 members favouring it and 80 votings against it, will now be tabled in the Rajya Sabha for its nod.
The CAB on Wednesday was passed with 125 votes in favour and 105 against it in the Rajya Sabha. Besides BJP, its allies such as JD-U and SAD, the legislation was supported by AIADMK, BJD, TDP and YSR-Congress.
