In an unbelievable event, a woman in Pune gave birth to baby girl from the same womb which carried her. Yes, the woman becomes a mother from her mother's womb which carried her once.
The woman named, Meenakshi Walan, whose uterus was damaged and couldn't conceive a baby, she got a womb donated by her mother on May 18, 2017. Finally, 17-months after getting her mother's womb, the woman, Meenakshi gave birth to a baby girl at Pune's Galaxy Care Hospital. A doctor who treated her claimed that it was the first such case in the country.
A 27-year-old Meenakshi, a resident of Vadodara was kept under observation for a few months after the transplant. Later she was sent back home to Gujarat once her health showed improvement. She went back to Pune after we experienced her first menstrual cycle.
In March this year, the embryo was transferred to her new uterus. And after 31 weeks and 5 days (over 7 months), Meenakshi prematurely underwent a cesarean section.
Ms Walan's mother donated her uterus to her daughter as Ms Walan's uterus had become non-functional following a miscarriage, she said. After the transplant surgery, Ms Walan conceived through in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) method, she said.
Dr Warty claimed that this was the first-of-its-kind delivery not only in India but the "Asia-Pacific region". "Nine such transplants and deliveries have taken place in Sweden, two in the USA and now this is the 12th in India," she claimed.
